Stevensville is a small town in Ravalli County, Montana, that is officially recognized as the first permanent settlement in the entire state. Forty-eight years before Montana became the nation’s forty-first state, Stevensville was settled by Jesuit Missionaries. The original settlers interacted with the Iroquois in the fur trade between 1812 and 1820, helping establish not only the growth of Christianity in the area, but agriculture, trade and the expansion of Stevensville itself. Surrounded by the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains, the small, historic town of Stevensville not only offers unique views, but some of the best outdoor recreation and watchable wildlife in the area.
Stevensville experiences the typical Montanan weather, falling under a semi-arid climate classification. This means cold, moderately snowy winters and hot, dry summers being filled with short crisp springs and autumns in the middle. Winters tend to be milder than the rest of the state due to the location west of the Rockies, which allows Stevensville and its surrounding areas to be influenced by mild, moist Pacific air.
Stevensville is a phenomenal place to get out and experience Montana outside of the big city charm of Missoula. Stevensville is naturally beautiful, and combines activities of the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains, allowing nature lovers to enjoy Montana for all that it is worth. Whether you want to go hiking, see the wildlife in their natural habitat, or just enjoy the great outdoors, Stevensville is the perfect place to be.
